classics workshops in the west midlands and the black counrty, and one of the most diverting sights in steve griffiths’ office are the shelves full of trophies and pictures of rallying cars being driven to their limits. the silverware is actually a record of steve’s career in racing, both as mechanic and as driver. back in 1995 steve was racing peugeots, including the 205 then the 106 in the 106 cup and network q round of the british wrc event.in the 306, steve was narrowly being edged into second place driving a 306 at the peugeot masters in belgium in 1997. he has raced all over the uk and in belgium and france, in the british championship, european championship and world championship. in addition to peugeots, cars that steve has raced and maintained include a subaru wrx, grp4 escort and astra gte. steve’s roots in race engineering and mechanics goes back to a history in moto-cross during the early 1980s. but much of steve’s feel for cars and precision engineering knowledge came from a period spent as mechanic for a peugeot team. in 1994 at the wrc event in finland, he was mechanic on a 106 that came first overall, group n1. case studies anyone who has been in a relationship for 45 years knows that the passage of time leaves its mark. when the relationship is with a 1965 mini traveller, bought from new, but left in a field under a tree since threw 1960’s and 70s then the effects of time can be all too apparent. but steve griffiths and severn classics can roll back the effects of time to bring a car back to showroom condition – even when, as in this case, the floor is hanging out. not surprisingly the list of replaced and rebuilt panels is extensive: new front end, new wings, panels and inner arches. a new floor, obviously, new rear side panels and doors reskinned. most mini travellers had the wooden rear section. but this model was smooth-sided and smooth roofed – lead-filling was used to tackle the problem of rotted external edges. a replacement 1275 engine and gearbox was sourced from a metro, the brakes, rubbers, electric looms and fuel tank replaced and the whole car finished beautifully in gainsborough red. a classic car restored – and a love affair reignited! a 1974 rear wheel arch mg midget set plenty of challenges for steve and his team at severn classics. the car, with a 1275 bmc engine, was in poor general disrepair with damage – including damaged and rotten doors and bonnet – poor chrome condition and slashed vinyl roof. the faded yellow paintwork was the least of the worries. but now the car has been converted into a an eye-catching delight, that is a joy to behold and a pleasure to drive with its fully serviced engine and refurbished components. when the car arrived, it was clear that significant areas of bodywork were going to need to be replaced. steve decided that the only way to achieve the required look was to construct some components from bare metal. for example the door sills were completely rotten and needed to be replaced and the design of the rear end required a change to the car’s profile. turning an n-reg ford poplar plus 1.3 into a group 4 rally car is a conversion that takes steve griffiths at severn classics back to his racing days. it’s a few years since he was a mechanic for peugeot and a rally driver himself, including a time spent racing grp4 escorts. this particular car was in very poor condition, having sat abandoned in the corner of a yard for many years. to be able to rally, the car needed to be rebuilt to conform to grp4 escort requiring construction of a new floor, back end, gear box tunnel , rear arches and replacement of the rear suspension. in addition, the original leaf springs and shocks won’t cut it for rallying, liable to tramping as they try to handle the high torque requirements of a 200bhp car. the solution was to build new substantial axle bracket boxes to pin the axle into the car. for the wheels, these were to be inner and outer sills, steps, inner wings and inner fitches, front panel and rear panel. welding is carried out by a fully-certified welder and severn classics is certified to custom fit fia cages.
